Buffalo Cave Rock Art Tour

This tour covers the prehistoric and historic archaeology, native culture and natural beauty of the southern Black Hills area.  Visit the site and view the ancient rock art of the earliest inhabitants to the Black Hills at the “Buffalo Cave” archaeology site.  This site is on the National Register of Historic Places.  There you will find petroglyphs on rock cliffs that may  date back as early as 8000 years ago.  See the ancient campsites evident by the stone tepee rings where natives made their stone tools and lived a hard but simple life.  The Buffalo Cave tour will also stop at the location of the first US Military Fort located within the Black Hills.  Visit the location where George A. Custer camped on August 3, 1874 and the route he traveled to the southern most point of his historic expedition to the Black Hills.  Drive by the route used by the Deadwood to Cheyenne stagecoach line in the late 1800’s.  See the vast plains where thousands of bison once roamed and witness their mark on the land.  The tour will visit the “Buffalo Stairs” a place where the bison themselves ground their hoof prints in stone.

The tour will also take in the prehistoric times with a display of fossils found in this area.  Evidence that you are in “dinosaur country” will be explained.  Hear how the Black Hills were formed and see some of its geometric land forms.  Hear about the wildlife and native vegetation that is present today on this location.
